"From a rugged vineyard above the Napa Valley floor comes this divine illustration of the potential of California Syrah. Aril’s full bodied Atlas Peak bottling shows classic aromas of dark cherry, mineral and earth; its acidity and structure combine to create a fine, complex harmony of flavor in something like the traditional style of the Northern Rhone (particularly the Cote-Rotie). Though the use of oak is judicious, the wine still achieves a signature smoky meatiness. Only 190 cases were produced, but it’s positively worth seeking out."
"The cool vintage has brought out a tannic earthiness, as well as a blast of black pepper that makes the blackberry fruit tingly on the tongue. It’s a complicated, individualistic wine, and you might want to cellar it for up to six years and see what happens."
“Displays a rustic, earthy minerality along with supple plum and black cherry fruit that’s complex and layered.”
"This is a lovely, gentle Syrah for drinking now with upscale fare. It’s soft in both tannins and acids, making it velvety in the mouth, and the blackberry, cassis and mocha flavors are, in a word, delicious."
"Aril’s 2010 Syrah bursts from the glass with the essence of blackberry jam, tapenade, smoke and incense, all in a voluptuous style that is quite appealing. Darker hints of tar and grilled herbs add richness on the weighty finish. With a little more attention to cooperage, this could be a meaningfully better wine, but it is impressive just the same. Anticipated maturity 2013–2018."
“Classic aromas of dark cherry, mineral and earth… a fine, complex harmony of flavor.”
